Huge Wall Art (Nursery Project)

Huge Wall Art (Nursery Project)

I started thinking about how I LOVE large statement pieces.
One of my favorite things is taking  ”junk” and making it into a large statement piece in a room, for next to nothing. Seriously, it’s a weird passion of mine.
So when we were in Denver a couple weeks ago, working on my sister’s nursery, and I stumbled upon a pile of free old windows casings at a neighbor’s house, I knew we would be making something out of them!
Why?
Because….they were BIG and FREE!
My sister Holly and I had talked about what to put above the crib before I found this. We knew it would have to be basically free to stay within the budget we were shooting for. We had even considered building a frame similar to this out of pallet wood, and then padding, upholstering it and tufting it, or stenciling inside….maybe adding wood of some sort.
So when I found this frame, I knew it was meant to be!
I had my brother-in-law paint it a deep turquoise blue. The same color they were painting the dresser.
Next, I needed to find out what to put inside.
And in the JoAnn’s dollar section bins, there it was…
The answer to what should go inside the huge empty frame….
These dollar cards.
I brought 4 bags of them home ($1 each) and ironed them flat. Then I used glue-stick to adhere them to the wall.
I was excited about how they turned out!
They made the best geometric pattern, and I had to add one random orange one in for some interest…..and color.
Here’s a peak at what we worked on the next day (pillows and crib bedding).
….and a picture of how fun it looked with the Color Blocked Curtains.
Not bad for a couple hours of work and around $4!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Color Blocked Curtains (Nursery Project)

Color Blocked Curtains (Nursery Project)

Color blocking is the cool thing right now. Just search "color block" on Pinterest and you'll see about every tangible thing in your life color blocked!

We found these babies at the GW in Denver. They were from a Target drop. But there were only three of them and we needed four!

Then my mother said, "why don't you turn them sideways?" and I said, "Mom, you're a genius!"

So, we turned them sideways (only using two curtains instead of three), added fabric and cut them down the middle to make four.

Here are the sewing gals. The pregnant one's a pro.... literally!  She has her own sewing business called Holly Petersen Designs, where she designs custom fitness apparel.

Here's Holly showing us what the next color layer will look like.

.....and here's the finished product!

If you saw the first post about Baby Z's Nursery, you will know that we had four days in Denver to create my sister's nursery. She and her husband wanted to use turquoise and orange.

(In case you're wondering, the rods and cool ends are from IKEA)

You can see more of this room, from Monday's post on Nursery Project #1: DIY Geometric Wall Art

DIY Geometric Wall Art (Nursery Project)

I'm fortunate that my sister blogs about home makeover projects -- since she has been helping with the nursery, she has already done all the work to write up and take photos of what's been completed. (So I'm copying/pasting her blog into mine)!

DIY Geometric Wall Art (Nursery Project)

I've been in Denver for the past four days decorating my little sister's nursery.
She's due Oct 1st.

When I asked them what they what they wanted for their nursery design, they said they wanted lots of color (turquoise and orange being them theme colors)!

They had a friend already painting a dresser a blue turquoise color and making a bar for the top to be a changing table, and they had an orange lamp. Besides that, the room was a clean slate!

Right after we touched-down it was game on to find fabric!
It was tough. There's just not a lot of material out there with teal, turquoise and orange, that is also modern looking.

We decided to pull our colors and vibe from this shower curtain at Target. They already had this in their downstairs bathroom, so this is what we used for our "inspiration piece".

The colors were close to perfect (maybe slightly too green), but we also loved the retro-modern feel.

By the end of the first day, we still had no fabric, but we did have the paint they used for the dresser, and we had our inspiration piece. So, I started on some DIY wall art (oh how I love working on DIY wall art).
I decided I needed to include the oh-so-popular triangle pattern. Is everyone loving triangle patterns as much as I am?

Do you think I have enough paint sponges and bowls? Just an FYI, I only had the turquoise blue, orange, white and black. The rest of the colors were a combination of those.

Here was my start.

I just sponged and sponged...and sponged. I was wishing I would have made the sponge triangles bigger, because it was taking forever!

I tried to have very little paint on the sponge and then dry brushed the edges.

Here the end result.

A close-up on the print.

Placed in the room.

This one took a lot of time, but it set a great feel to the room, and was such a fun and colorful piece.
....and they already had the canvas and the paint.

So there is the first project in Baby Z's Nursery Reveal.
